Deb Schell is a Global Online Community Consultant who has guided the business strategy of over 100 leaders launch their online community.

It all started when Deb launched an online membership in 2020 to help others find calm in daily life. Planning to charge membership, and then having ZERO paid members over a three-day launch weekend, Deb learned hard lessons.

The challenges she faced in monetizing an online community can be avoided by taking steps that Deb teaches in her book, Creator to Community Builder.

After that, she decided to continue hosting community events for free. Over the next six months Deb facilitated over 30 virtual workshops with leaders who shared tips on how they found calm.

The experience brought fellow community builders into Deb's community. Each week Deb hosed a group where members asked questions about their own communities, which led to opening a consultancy.

As Deb worked with clients from all over the US, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, and in Europe: England, France, Germany, and Ireland.

From 2020 to present, Deb is the host of The Community Strategy Podcast. She has interviewed over 100 leaders in business to learn first hand the best practices for cultivating belonging, and providing a safe space for their members.

Over 12 short chapters Deb shares steps take you from your community concept, to validation with the IDEA Framework, why you need to talk to your ideal members, and how to select the best online platform, or home for your content, courses, or programs.

In Creator to Community Builder: Find Calm While Building an Online Community, I share my journey with clients, providing examples, and giving you expert advice from community industry professionals.

Jumpstart 2025 Workshop Recording

Whether you’re creating a course, program, or membership, every choice you make — format, pricing, timing, and duration — plays a critical role in your success.

With American adults making an estimated 35,000 decisions daily, it’s easy to experience decision fatigue, which can lead to poor choices or costly inaction.

For community builders, that decision fatigue could cost more than just time. Building an online community can require an investment of up to $20,000 in the first year alone, especially as tech platforms and AI tools rapidly reshape how we engage.

Imagine six months — or longer — trying to figure out platforms, refine offers, and launch without earning any revenue. If your idea isn’t thoroughly tested, this process can stretch even further, leading to added financial strain and potential burnout.

If you’ve decided to start a community because you know the power of shared values and mutual support, you’ve chosen a unique and rewarding challenge.

But the reality is, that without a well-validated idea and a clear path, you risk extended delays and missed opportunities.

I’ve learned it’s far easier (and more profitable) to serve a focused group willing to make a meaningful investment than to aim for thousands of low-value sales. And if you’re not aiming for a 100,000-person audience, it’s even more crucial to lock in a purpose that will drive real engagement and profitability.

This recording dives into:

  • The top 3 reasons communities fail — and how to avoid them.
  • How purpose becomes your strongest tool for engagement.
  • Proven, low-effort marketing strategies that don’t waste time or money.
I want this!

How purpose becomes your strongest tool for engagement. Proven, low-effort marketing strategies that don’t waste time or money. Cut through decision fatigue, avoid costly mistakes, and start building a profitable, purpose-driven community. Unlock success without trial and error — save time, skip the overwhelm, and set up your community for profitability sooner than you thought possible.
